PPC Affiliate Marketing Introduction

I’ve received a number of requests asking for an explanation of just what exactly PPC affiliate marketing is, and so I created the following screencast which gives a quick walkthrough of the process.

Please be forewarned that I myself am a complete newbie to this game, so don’t take anything I say as the gospel.

I spent many hours yesterday playing around with how to best produce this screencast. I managed to actually set it up so that my Camtasia flash video embedded into my post, but I feared for the bandwidth repercussions that might ensue; the file size was 80 megs, and if 2,000 people viewed it that would be 160 GB in bandwidth.

So, I ended up hosting it with YouTube… which unfortunately completely kills the quality. I already recorded the video in a reduced size of 1024×768, but will try for 800×600 in my next screencast to see if that helps with the quality.

One alternative I could do is find a webhost who wants to sponsor my screencasts. In exchange for hosting them, I’d write “This screencast kindly hosted by Host.com” at the bottom of each video.

Another alternative is that I could pay for an account at Screencast.com, but I don’t really want to shell out $250 just to provide better quality videos. I also don’t think that 100GB of storage space and 100GB of monthly bandwidth is enough (I could just host that on my current server!)

But maybe the following YouTube video quality will suffice for the future? Please share your thoughts and/or suggestions as I literally spent around 7 hours yesterday trying to find the best solution for hosting my screencasts.

So what did you think of the screencast? Is this something you’d like to see more of in the future?

I really liked it, although I did think you were going a bit slow.
The other problem was not being able to read the text, but I don’t know if we really need to so that we understand.
One thing that still confuses me, is that do we link directly to the form, or do we create another website and then link to the form from that website. I hope you understand what I mean.

Anyway, I’m sure the you will explain in more detail in future screencasts, but great job on this one!

I enjoyed the screencast, please do more!

Suggestion I would have is planning (or even rehearsing) a bit beforehand so that you know what you’re going to show first and waste less time in the video which would allow for you to cover more content in less time. Can’t read the text (which could help protect what you are bidding on) but can put 2+2 together when you are saying whilst highlighting what it says.

What software do you use to capture the screencast with? I am wanting to do up some similar videos on a website on a different topic (programming) but not sure what software to use.

I use Camtasia 3, but you can use CamStudio.org which is a free clone.

I like the video. I know you new at affiliate marketing but you maybe able to answer my question. What budget should we start with?

Great explanation and screencast. Yes, I would love to listen more on other topics. Much easier to understand and easier on the eyes than reading.

You went after credit card keywords when you just started? Haha that is crazy, but a good way to learn I guess.

Hey Tyler,

you could try the H264 codec, which reduces the size a LOT, keeping the best quality you could hope for (HD). I’ve got videos with a minute or two of those slow motions captures of nature that take about 3-10mb.

Not bad, maybe makes notes b4 hand because it seemed like you where jumping around from topic to topic and not well prepared.

Would love to see more

Keep it up

Definately more would be welcome as far as I’m concerned.

Tyler,

I have something on another topic I was wondering if you could comment on or maybe post on if you are interested. I have a website that I used to sell text links on at a monthly rate, however things are changing. Just today I have one of my regular advertisers ask for a different kind of deal which would be like a paid plug. The paid plug equals out to about 10 months of what they paid for the text link before. I am worried about my advertising revenue though if more and more advertisers switch to these one time deals rather than the recurring monthly ad. Have you experienced this?

The one thing I don’t understand about PPC is that you make your own landing page to get the user to go to the advertiser’s landing page? Is that how it works? Do you have to deal with those lame 10 page long sales letters ever?

Awesome Job Tyler. Keep’em coming.

Seeing your landing page gave me an idea of one of the concepts you’re trying out.

I’m personally in the same boat as you trying to really test and understand that whole PPC Affliate game. So far I’m in the negatives but I’m learning a lot so it’s ok.

I wrote a quick article on my site talking about how I blew the first $157.97 by not paying closer attention to my AdWords account.

Have you read Google Cash? I found it to be a really good resource. Just picked it up yesterday.

I don’t understand how your maximum bid was $0.85, but the one click you got in that campaign cost more than $2???
