I Say “Um” Too Much (and What I’m Doing About It)

October 3, 2017 Posted by Tyler Cruz

As you may have noticed, I have been recording a lot of videos lately – a lot more than I ever have in the past. This is partly due to me being more comfortable doing so with my new webcam and audio setup, as I used to take out a camcorder and tripod to do them!

One thing I’ve noticed when editing and playing back my videos is just how often I say “Um” or “Uh”. I say it so often in some videos that it is extremely annoying and distracting. Now that I’m aware of it, I am trying to rid myself of this bad habit.

In my video below, I talk about this more, as well as some of the tips and tricks I’ve learned to try to help combat this verbal faux pas.

Announcing that I am aware that I say “UMM” all the time and that I am consciously going to try to cut down on that in the future. Okay? UMM… thank you for watching.

Nobody F$%king cares if you say um too much. We care about you putting out relevant content.

I used to think you got lucky with your early sites. Now I’m starting to think I was right.

Have you learned nothing yet on why people actually come here to read your blog? Here’s a hint… It’s not for product reviews or half ass content like this.

How many times are you going to piss away an opportunity to bring this dead blog back?

  3. Robert says:

Tyler, your content depth is literally UMM incredible.

Are you serious with this post? If you’re going to post garbage like this, just stop.

You’re thinking too much when you talk. Besides keeping your mouth closed so you won’t get any umm in it you can also use jump cuts when you edit the video. Take some B roll footage like close ups of your hands moving when you talk, or images of you writing, or typing at the computer, and splice them in when you say umm then do voice over to keep the talking going. It will add a variety of shots to the video to make it more visually interesting and cover up your umms.
