PublisherForums.com $7,000 Contest Launch!

It took me a month to set up and finally launch this contest simply because there were so many sponsors and prizes to organize.
PublisherForums.com is giving away over $7,000 in prizes and cash over the next 7 weeks. Thanks to the large support of 19 sponsors, we have a total of 55 prizes that will be given away to 12 lucky winners.
The prizes are put into prize packages. For example, 1st place of the Top Posters category is actually comprised of a bundle 7 prizes valued at $2,163.
There are 3 different prize categories (top posters, quality posters, and top referrers), and it is possible to win prizes in all 3. Therefore, it is possible for one person to win $3,545 in prizes if he places 1st in all 3 categories.
I will be posting more about the contest throughout it’s run, but get started now! The earlier you enter, the better your chances.
This should be a very fun contest – all you have to do is post (and/or refer members if you want). Many of you already comment on this blog, which is not much different from posting on a forum.
You will meet a lot of like-minded people at PublisherForums. It’s a webmaster forum, so you’ll feel right at home.
Below is a video I made last night to present the contest. It runs just over 30-minutes long because there are so many prizes to announce (55!) that it took me forever to go through them all, even though I was going as quickly as I could.

Nice contest. The idea is clearly to get posts on the forum. Why have a big ad at the top of the forum, it only drives people away?

If the prizes were better, I’d consider participating but the hours required (25 hours if you assume it’ll 5 minutes per a quality post) doesn’t make this contest worthwhile.
I doubt it’s going to take 5 minutes to write one good post. So long as you contribute something to the thread, I am sure that’s more than enough for a “good post.”
I think his 5 minutes per post included reading the posts and replies first. I agree that it does add up to a lot of time. I think Tyler got a little optimistic or overly aggressive with his 300 post minimum. Overall though it is a good strategy to get people to participate.
Yeah but at the same time, you want to set the bar high, so if the contest turns out to be really popular, it should be easily attainable.

I agree with both points. If you’re trying to get more people to come over, you have to make it more accessible. But if you have a big userbase already, setting the bar higher can be a good idea to make the contest more meaningful.

Interesting contest, but I think you should add some sort of social media element, just to get the word out. Extra points for tweeting, blogging, and so on. You’re looking to promote both the publisherforums brand and the brands of your sponsors.

It’ll work somewhat well for a little while, but probably won’t result in a huge ramp up in activity. more importantly it’ll probably go right back to the way it was afterwards. this isn’t how communities are built, i’m afraid. and I agree with the others who said that you should take the ads down. Ads are only worthwhile if they are incorporated very elegantly, or if the site is already humming along. when its struggling to get any posts at all, you need to eat the cost and the time and have as few impediments to activity as possible.
you’ve been running forums for a long time, tyler, but this is community management 101.
Good points. It would be very tough to keep that momentum going unless you are able to attract a lot of quality forum members who have a legitimate desire to be part of the community. It’s more likely that the users you do attract will only be interested in the prizes and will leave once the contest is over.

Sounds like a great contest. Wish I would have seen it a little bit sooner as I’m already two weeks behind lol.
I always wondered why the forums were so slow but hopefully this will help jump start it. Once people see you can find other good and interesting people in there it should help keep it going.
