I’ve Hit 1,400 RSS Subscribers!

March 5, 2008 Posted by Tyler Cruz

This post was a bit late getting up, as I actually broke the 1,400 mark on February 23rd, 2008. My RSS dipped just under the 1,400 mark since hitting it about 10-days ago, but has been staying close to it in the 1,375-1,395 range and should build back up in the 1,400’s again soon. Update: Yesterday I was at 1,419 🙂

According to the past two months, I appear to be gaining 200 new RSS subscribers each month. It was only been one month prior that I hit 1,200 RSS, which was a month after I hit the the huge milestone of 1,000 RSS subscribers. If my RSS continues to grow at this rate of incline I will have over 3,000 subscribers by the end of the year, which was one of my goals for 2008.

While it’s always great to see higher RSS numbers, I’d much rather see higher website traffic numbers right now. The reason is simple: advertising exposure. Right now, the only ads that appear to my RSS readers are Paid Reviews and the Embedded 300×250 Banner. Compare this to the ads that appear on TylerCruz.com the website, such as the 125×125 and 728×90 banner ads, Kontera, AdToll, etc. and you can see why I want to raise my website traffic.

Higher website traffic will allow me to raise my ad prices, whereas the only prices I can legitimately raise right now are Paid Reviews and the Embedded ad since they are shown to RSS readers.

Some readers have complained about these RSS milestone posts. I’m sorry that some people don’t like them, but I sure do. I love to show my accomplishments, and think it serves as motivation food as well.

In any case, I only make these RSS milestone posts whenever I… well… reach a new milestone or goal, and since my next target is set at 1,700, you guys won’t have to worry about another one of these posts for a while. After all, I’ll probably be 40 before I gain another 300 RSS subscribers, right? 🙂

The dips in the graph below are from days when Feedburner hiccupped. It usually happens when it cannot read Google Reader. I’m very close to having 1,500 appear on the left Y-Axis!

As is always the tradition when I post a new RSS record, I set a new RSS goal and see if the prediction I made on my last one was correct. My goal when I hit the 1,200 milestone was to hit 1,400 RSS subscribers and average 1,200, and I predicted that I’d do so around early mid-March to early April. Fortunately, I was wrong and managed to make it 1-2 months earlier.

My new goal is to hit 1,700 RSS subscribers. My prediction is that I’ll make this goal by July.

Some of you may be wondering what the first photo is all about. Well, when I hit my 1,200 record, my girlfriend and I made Rice Krispie treats to celebrate, and so now I plan to make something new every time I make my new goal.

This time we made gingerbread cookies!

I already have something planned for when I make my next goal 🙂

  1. keep these posts coming. it is inspiring to read them, and hopefully I will get there someday soon 😀

    Pretty cool milestone.

The easy way to increase traffic would be not to publish a full feed, but I expect many subscribers (myself included) would hate this and probably follow less.

Try adding a “comment” button in the rss feed, and encourage people to comment. That way we are reading in rss readers, then visiting to comment.

  3. How about making a post about using Excel to chart your income? I read that you’re using Excel to take detailed accounting records of your private ads, so how about a post about how to do that, tips on using it, etc.

  4. Tyler Ingram says:

Hey great accomplishment! 1400 is a nice number, I’ve got 20-30 lol

I don’t know why people don’t like to see other people’s accomplishments, if you’re proud of what you’ve done then why not share it huh?

  5. Phillip says:

LOL, I love your creative RSS cookies ideas.
    Congrats!

  6. Congratulations on that achievement Tyler, theres no worry that you’ll get to 1700 by July and even 3000 by the end of 2008. 🙂

  11. Congrats Tyler! I don’t mind these posts at all. It shows that you are making progress!

  12. Joe says:

Am I the only one that thinks baking cookies for your RSS subscriber number is a little faglish? Or at least corny.

  13. I love these milestone posts dude… that’s so cool. Wishing you the best for 1500 milestone.

  14. Mike Huang says:

Congrats again Tyler! Those cookies look delicious! I’m also wondering how you guys made the #s so perfect 🙂

  15. Right now you have 1399 subscribers, you went down 5 subscribers. I hope that’s not because of the cookies you made somehow hahaha…

Anyway, that’s part of the game. As long as on average your subscribers increase, you are on the right track!

    Congrats.

  16. I’m hungry now….. 🙁

    Congrats! 🙂

  17. knupnet says:

Congrats on another milestone Tyler…. Keep it up!

  18. Not bad. Im hovering at the 100 mark right now. I just added the email subscription option though so hopefully that will be increasing.

  19. Tom says:

HaHa, RSS might be hight, but no Page Rank.

    • Debo Hobo says:

I am bewildered at the moment, the page rank on my little blog is higher than Tyler’s and John Chows put together. That totally baffles me and I only have 50 readers.

  20. Debo Hobo says:

That is so cool! I should do something really great when I reach 100.

  21. David Chew says:

    Congratulation Tyler.

  22. Flimjo says:

You definitely need to keep the full feed. But you can encourage readers to visit your blog in each post. Or deep link to other posts; that way, they’ll click on those and visit your blog after reading your latest post.

  23. Hussein says:

I’m one of that 1.4k subscriber. Great writings. Keep on blogging friend.

  24. Congratulations!!! I’m only a little behind you, say 1390, but give me time and i’ll catch you!
